Honoring My Parents with a Blessing Well

When I found out that the Blessing Wells are fresh water wells put in where people have no water, I immediately thought: “I have so much water!” I can’t imagine what it must be like to live without it.

I am so glad that Lori told me we could have a well put in a village in India in honor of someone who has passed. What a beautiful thought!

I remember Mom and Dad. My mom was 4 feet 10 inches tall, and Dad towered over her. They grew up during the Depression and later married. They were quite a pair. Together for 50 years, they raised six of us children. My father worked to support the family, while my mother cared for us and also babysat. There are so many things I wish I had said to them while they were alive.

Everyone was precious to her. Her heart always reached out to those who were less fortunate. She shared with others, showing kindness and friendship. My mother admired Mother Teresa deeply, especially her unconditional love for lepers, the dying, and the underprivileged.

I wanted to honor my parents by donating a well.

When the Blessing Well was put in, I truly felt the love. The dedication plate bears their names, and the entire village gathered for the inauguration of the pump. Now, an entire village has access to clean water—free from mud, sewage, and disease. Women no longer have to sweat or risk their health and lives just to get a clean drink of water in the middle of a sweltering day.

I know that my parents must be pleased. If my mother were there, she would surely carry the heavy pail of water to the children. My dad would walk right alongside her, step by step.

I know they’re happy about this—just as I am.
